Significant milestone for the Baltic Grid: Advanced FRR Dimensioning is live!
N-SIDE announces a significant milestone in strengthening the Baltic Grid: Advanced FRR Dimensioning is live!
Following the successful synchronization of the Baltic power systems with Continental Europe in February 2025, our focus has shifted toward refining the technical mechanisms that ensure long-term grid resilience. In January, the Baltic Balancing Capacity Market (BBCM) platform took an important technical leap forward with the full go-live of the FRR Dimensioning Function. This update introduces high-resolution probabilistic modeling to ensure that Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania determine the exact reserve capacity needed to maintain grid frequency at the lowest cost to society.
By utilizing Monte Carlo simulations, the platform models potential imbalance scenarios to ensure the grid is prepared for even the most extreme conditions. This regional approach allows AST, Elering, and Litgrid to aggregate data across the entire Baltic LFC Block, thereby optimizing reserve sharing and enhancing regional socio-economic welfare.
For N-SIDE, this milestone showcases the power of our Improved Probabilistic Method, which processes 1-minute ACEol data to capture real-time system uncertainty. We help Baltic TSOs achieve these results through a modular, future-proof architecture designed to satisfy the stringent European grid reliability requirements.
Globally, this project serves as a blueprint for how multi-TSO balancing markets can cost-efficiently transition toward a secure, renewables-driven future.
We thank Navitasoft for their collaboration with us in making the Baltic grid more resilient than ever! We look forward to continuing this digitalization journey to ensure long-term energy security in the region.
